Celebrating Seven Historic Female Firsts on California’s Courts of Appeal

Justice Mesiwala will share the triumphant journeys of seven female firsts on the California Courts of Appeal from her recent article for the California Supreme Court Historical Society.(1) first CA female justice - Annette Abbott Adams; (2) first CA African American female justice - Arleigh Woods; (3) first CA Jewish American female justice and youngest CA intermediate appellate court justice - Sheila Prell Sonenshine; (4) first CA Asian American female justice, first CA immigrant female justice, first CA non-native English speaking female justice, and first CA disabled female justice- Joyce Kennard; (5) first CA Hispanic female justice - Ramona Godoy Perez; (6) first and only CA female military veteran justice - Eileen Moore; and (7) first CA openly lesbian justice - Therese Stewart.

Deputy Hofmann will discuss the judicial appointments process, including benefits of the California Judicial Mentor Program and need for a robust applicant pool.

Justice Eileen Moore, California’s first and only female military veteran justice and Judge Tania Vallejo will share their experiences as a judicial officer who embody excellence and service.
