From the Battlefield to the Bench: Two Vietnam Veterans on Service, Justice & the Law

Join distinguished jurists and Vietnam veterans Justice Eileen C. Moore and Judge David O. Carter for a thought-provoking MCLE program exploring the intersection of military service, mental health, and the justice system.

Through their unique perspectives and experiences, the speakers will examine some of the most pressing challenges facing veterans today, including homelessness, PTSD, and the profound psychological impact of moral injury. Theprogram will explore how these experiences can shape a veteran’s interactions with the legal system and, at times, createbarriers to receiving fair and meaningful access to justice.

The program also offers an opportunity to earn Elimination of Bias credit while examining the implicit biases and systemic blind spots that can affect justice-involved veterans. Attendees will gain greater insight into the ways trauma and military experience can be misunderstood within the legal profession and learn how greater awareness and cultural competency can help dismantle those barriers.

This is more than a discussion of veterans’ issues. It is an opportunity to better understand the people behind the cases and to consider how the legal profession can respond with greater awareness, fairness, and compassion. Participants will leave better equipped to recognize bias, navigate the unique challenges veterans may face, and advocate more effectively forthis historically underserved community.
