It is with great pleasure that the Executive Board of the 2022–2023 UC Irvine School of Law Moot Court Competition invites you to serve as an oral argument judge for this year’s competition.

As a growing law school, we count on the local legal community to train and encourage our next generation of lawyers. We are incredibly grateful that we have been able to rely on local judges and attorneys each year to provide challenging questions and valuable feedback. This year, we have 52 student competitors. The students are eager to expand their legal skill set – and answer tough questions from the judges. We are asking for your expertise to give these students a truly challenging and constructive competition experience.

The oral argument schedule is as follows:

    • Preliminary Round I: January 31, February 1, 2, 3, and 4
    • Preliminary Round II: February 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11
    • Top 16 Elimination Round: February 23, 24, and 25
    • Quarterfinal Round: March 1 and 2
    • Semifinals: March 17

On weekdays, we will hold two sessions of concurrent rounds beginning at 7:00 p.m and ending at 9:00 p.m. On Saturdays, we will hold arguments from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For Saturday arguments, we ask judges to commit to either a morning session (10:00 - 1:00 p.m.) or afternoon session (1:00 - 4:00 p.m.), or both. Please be advised that Preliminary Rounds I & II will be held via Zoom and the remaining arguments will take place here at UCI Law. Prior to oral arguments, judges will receive a bench memorandum summarizing the relevant law and containing suggested questions for competitors. Meals and parking will be provided to judges by the Competition.

The 2022-2023 Moot Court Competition is based on a fictional case, Dr. Helen Croix v. Aguefort University. The problem presents the following issues: Whether the termination of a university professor for statements made on a personal, public blog infringes upon the professor's Fourteenth Amendment liberty interest in her reputation or violates the professor's First Amendment free speech rights.

If you are able to donate your time during one or more of these dates and times, please email me at lawmootcourt@lawnet.uci.edu. Please include your email address and phone number, and also indicate your preference for the dates and times that you are available to judge the competition.

As you know, courtroom experience is pivotal to law students’ growth as young professionals. We rely on our community partners to assist us in providing this unique and vital opportunity to the next generation of Orange County attorneys. Thank you for your kind consideration of this invitation, and we hope that you can join us. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

    Thank you for your time,

We are in need of volunteer judges for a collegiate mock trial tournament called 'Beach Party' hosted by UC Irvine, taking place in person at UC Irvine's campus on Jan. 7th & 8th. This elite event will feature some of the best teams from across the country, where each round is competitively matched.

Many of our competitors are women who are looking to go into law. It would be wonderful for them to see women in law as their judges!

You can sign up to judge by clicking HEREPlease sign up by Dec 30th so we know if you're joining us!

The rounds: The trials are approximately three hours long and will require no preparation. There will be two days of trial with each day consisting of a morning round (~9:00 – 12:00 PM) and an afternoon round (~2:00 – 5:00 PM). You can judge as many or as few as you like. If you have any attorney friends or colleagues who would also like to judge, please let us know so we can pair you together.

The case: This year’s case is a civil matter with a suit of negligence. The defendant company is the owner of a small plane that crashed resulting in the death of 2 people. The evidence and witnesses available vary across the rounds, which makes each trial unique and interesting to watch.

Requirements and orientation: The only requirement to judge is to have some prior experience with the federal rules of evidence (most often via a law school evidence course OR prior mock trial participation). Before each round, we will have a brief orientation session which will explain trial procedure, scoring, and your role as a judge.

The UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel is seeking highly qualified, well-rounded first and second year law students to participate in our volunteer law clerk program during the summer of 2023.

We endeavor to expose our summer law clerks to the practice, as well as the substance, of law.  In terms of research projects, preference is given to narrowly focused, relatively brief assignments, submitted by attorneys who are willing to work closely with the law clerks and to include them, when appropriate and possible, in meetings, hearings, negotiations, etc.

The law clerks will support the attorneys in responding to client inquiries, as well as in developing tools and resources to assist clients at the campuses and at the Office of the President.  Assistance will be provided across a broad spectrum of subject matters within the following practice groups: (1) business, transactions and innovation, (2) educational affairs, campus services, governance and compliance, (3) litigation, and (4) labor and employment.  Assigning attorneys are expected to give constructive and comprehensive feedback to the law clerks on their work product.

If interested, please submit your coversheet, resume, transcript and writing sample in a single PDF file (e.g., Doe_John.PDF) to OGC-Resumes@spmail.ucop.edu.

To ensure full consideration, candidates should apply by January 13, 2023.  The positions will remain open until filled.

2023 summer law clerks may qualify for a stipend from UC Legal.

UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel is located at 1111 Franklin Street, 8th Floor, Oakland, California 94607.  For more information on UC Legal please visit  https://www.ucop.edu/uc-legal/index.html.
