Position Summary:
The incumbent independently handles a full range of health care legal matters and projects, to include those which hold substantial importance and impact, with an emphasis on health care regulatory analysis and transactional matters for UCI Health. Coordinates and liaises between the Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, Program in Public Health, and the Office of General Counsel concerning the needs and requirements of these units pertaining to legal matters. Will report administratively to the Health Sciences Principal Counsel and the Chief Health Sciences Counsel, and as a member of the Office of Campus Counsel, to the Chief Campus Counsel, UC Irvine and, as a member of the Office of General Counsel, to the Deputy General Counsel for Health Affairs as to the substance of legal services and advice. Incumbent has responsibility to facilitate the objectives of UCI Health by providing timely and effective legal support to each of these functions, as well as ensuring UCI Health minimizes potential legal exposure and legal risk. May provide functional advice, training and / or guidance to less-experienced attorneys. May act as a liaison with outside counsel, and / or represent the University in litigation.

Salary Range:
Annual Rate Minimum $129,600.00 Midpoint $191,900.00 Maximum $254,200.00
Required Qualifications:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
Solid understanding of and demonstrated experience with the legal issues affecting the healthcare industry and regulatory environment.
Must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school.
Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar. (Out-of-state hire would be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable period.)
Relevant practice experience in a law firm, or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation or other entity.
Proven abilities in collaboration, facilitation, and strategic and creative thinking.
Thorough understanding of highly complex legal issues and ability to foresee implications in specialty area, even when ambiguous or hidden.
Strong interpersonal communication skills, including proven ability to actively listen, negotiate, persuade and educate, including with constituencies who have differing priorities and perspectives.
Skills to gain trust and build credibility with a broad group of colleagues and clients, to include senior leaders.
Strong written communication skills and ability to create and deliver effective materials and / or presentations appropriate to a particular audience.
In-depth research skills to draft accurate, complete and persuasive legal documents, such as legal memoranda and client alerts.
Proven decision-making ability, even when unpopular, earning credibility and support from colleagues.
Trusted partner with senior management and a diverse spectrum of clients.
Relied on to represent institutional concerns persuasively to internal and external parties.
Strong coaching and leadership skills to provide clear expectations, guidance and performance feedback to less experienced attorneys and legal support staff.
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact when handling sensitive or potentially sensitive issues.
Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards.
Minimum 5 years progressive work in healthcare law
Bachelor’s Degree in healthcare administration, public health, nursing or other relevant field
Licenses and Certifications:
California State Bar(Preferred)
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
Experience working in a public academic research institution preferred.
Experience working with state and federal fraud and abuse laws preferred.
Experience working with HIPAA privacy and confidentiality laws preferred.
Thorough knowledge of patient safety principles, regulatory guidelines, and best practices
